News Analysis: Johor's revival of priority projects augurs well for the economy

Tuesday, September 22, 1998, New Straits Times.

By Charlotte Venudran

Johor is taking the cue from the Federal Government to kick-start the economy by regenerating domestic economic activities.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman recently announced plans to spend RM530 million over the next three years to revive various infrastructure and construction projects.

These would essentially be "priority projects" designed to meet not only the immediate infrastructure needs of the rakyat, but to also spur much needed economic activities in Johor.

In addition to State-funded infrastructure works, Johor is also pushing for privatisation of projects to boost public amenities in the State.

Concessionaires who were awarded projects have been told to take advantage of the lower cost of materials and improved capital liquidity following the Federal Government's foreign exchange control measures, to speed up construction.

A case in point is the proposed
Gemas-Segamat-Senai-Pasir Gudang Highway and the Senai-Johor Perdana highway.

These privatised projects, which had stalled due to the economic slowdown, are now on the road to recovery.
