Work-at-home concept to help disabled, housewives

THE Human Resources Ministry has introduced several new employment concepts, among them the work-at-home model, in a bid to reduce the number of foreign workers in the country, Tamil Nesan reported.

Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said the work-at-home concept involved companies setting up mini-operations near housing areas where housewives and disabled people could earn an income without travelling far from home. He said 10,381 disabled people were currently registered with the Manpower Department and they represented a huge pool of workers for the concept.

Dr Subramaniam, who is also the Segamat MP, was speaking to reporters after launching the work-at-home concept in his constituency on Saturday. He said those employed could be paid between RM300 and RM600 a month, adding that the programme had been successful in other parts of the country since it began a few months ago.

Economist Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam said the mini budget, scheduled to be tabled soon should be specifically for viable projects and not money allocated broadly, Malaysia Nanban reported. He said the money must be allocated for projects that met the basic needs of the people.{jcomments on}
