JOHOR BARU: Johoreans have been reminded to use water carefully this festive season as a prolonged dry spell has caused water levels at dams and water treatment plants to recede.

For the first time in four years, Syarikat Air Johor Holdings Sdn Bhd (SAJ) will carry out water rationing in Kluang expected to affect 25,000 people from today to March 13. SAJ corporate communications head Jamaluddin Jamil said the rationing had to be carried out at seven zones in Kluang as the level at the Sungai Sembrong dam dropped to 0.3m on Thursday, which was below the critical level of 0.5m. He said that Sungai Sembrong supplied raw water to the Sembrong Timur water treatment plant.

On water levels at other dams, Jamaluddin said the level at the Congok dam dipped to 4.81m from its usual 5.06m while the Bekok dam’s level dropped to 10.2m from the normal 13m. State International Trade, Industry, Energy, Water, Communication and Environment Committee chairman Tan Kok Hong, who chaired a meeting to discuss the drought, urged people to conserve water, especially during this festive season.

Tan said the contingencies included raising the river’s water level with sand bags and diverting water from areas with ample supply. “I will direct district officers to ensure that water sources (rivers) are not diverted for farming or agriculture,” he said, adding that the water rationing was only temporary. The Johor Drainage and Irrigation Department manages dams in Bekok, Sembrong, Macap and Labong in Mersing. SAJ manages dams at Juaseh in Labis, Congok in Mersing and Lebam in Kota Tinggi. Two other dams are managed by Singapore’s Public Utilities Board and a private company in Masai.
