JOHOR BAHARU: A lance corporal and a sergeant pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here yesterday to receiving a RM300 bribe three years ago.

L/C Khamis Jamangin, 40, and Sgt Ahmad Dzamanhuri Abd Rashid, 49, who are based at the Segamat police station, are accused of having received the money from one Lee Long Jian, 20, as an inducement not to detain him and his friend, Pang Jin Jie, 20, on suspicion of drug possession under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, at a bowling centre parking lot in Segamat at about 5.30 pm on Oct 16, 2008.

The charge, under Section 11(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1997, punishable under Section 16 of the same Act and read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, provides for a maximum 20-year jail term and five times the amount involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Meanwhile, Khamis also claimed trial to another charge of receiving RM500, also from Lee, at Jalan Nagasari 23, Segamat Baru, Segamat, at about 11.40 pm on Oct 17, 2008, as an inducement not to detain the latter and his friend Pang for alleged possession of drugs.

Judge Madihah Hairullah allowed the two accused bail of RM3,000 in one surety, respectively, and fixed Feb 7, 2012, for re-mention and to enable them to engage a lawyer.
