Segamat flood 2011 update 4th Feb 2011

Its bright and sunny now in the morning and people are hanging out their washing. The weather has been good the last 2 days with just a bit of shower here and there.
Cleaning up is happening in a major way despite the Chinese New Year celebration. Services like TNB, SAJ, KTM, MDS have been working 24hrs a day to restore elecricity, water, railway line and clearing up rubbish.
Some homes and businesses have organised their own rubbish clearance.
Most businesses are still closed with just a few exceptions.
After the 2006 flood, the goverment tried to reassure Segamat people that the 2006 flood was a freak, once in 50 years disaster. I think now, nobody believes this.
Many people have decided to move their homes and businesses to higher ground and not go through the trauma of the flood and it's recovery again.
Areas like Segamat Baru and Bandar Putra (IOI) are starting to look very attractive. Low lying areas like Bandar Utama, Sia Her Yam area, Tmn Segar, Kg. Abdullah, Tmn Midah & Tmn Pelangi will be badly hit. Many people will definitely move out of these areas.
Even though many homes have been devastated, organisations like the Segamat Autistic Centre was badly hit too. The centre is located in Tmn Emas behind Tmn Segar. This was one of the lowest housing estates in Segamat with water reaching chest height. The Autistic Centre lost all it's student's records. Computers and a laminating machine were destroyed as well as a good collection of toys and therapy equipment.
Such NGOs will need the public support to get it running again because they provide valuable service to the people of Segamat. Segamat.com will list such organisations in need soon so that the public can find out how to help them.
