THE Segamat Community College has created history by being the first institute of its kind to offer courses on piloting light aircraft.
College director Mohd Rohaimi Yusof said the basic course was set up following a survey that revealed a huge demand for such a course from members of the public. He said the programme is a collaboration between the college and the Subang-based Air Adventure Flying Club. The club has more than a decade's worth of experience in training pilots.
It has various types of light aircraft in its fleet. Trainers and students are expected to use the mini airport at the nearby Gagak Country Club for practical training purposes. The well-equipped mini airport was among the reasons why the flying club agreed to set up flying courses in Segamat.
"The college is still finalising the fee and duration for each training course with the club," said Rohaimi. He said the first intake for the flying courses will begin in the middle of next year. Interested applicants may enrol now. Rohaimi hoped the new flying courses may change the perception that community colleges offer "second-grade" courses. "Piloting is a professional course, and this would enable trainees of this community college to become high-earners."
Meanwhile, 14 staff from the college had a taste of the upcoming training courses for pilots during a simulation exercise at the Gagak club recently. The group boarded a Cessna 172P light aircraft owned by the flying club to be given a briefing by a trained pilot. Those interested in the flying courses may call the college in Bandar IOI at 07-943 1633, or log on to www.kkseg.edu.my.
