By Sim Bak Heng
From NST Online
SEGAMAT: A team of lecturers and undergraduates from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) visited SMK Gemerih recently to promote the fields of electrical, electronic and robotic engineering to lower secondary school students.
UPM Associate Professor Mohd Nizar Hamidon, who was part of the team, said the number of Malay applicants in these fields of studies at UPM had shown a decline over the years.
"Our study showed that among the reasons for the drop was the lack of knowledge on the career prospects of these fields of studies.

Whats an Optometrist
From Chee Hoe's blog
When I am asked about my profession, 90% of the time people have no idea what an Optometrist is. So I have decided to explain to everyone here the various eye care professions that is currently out there in the industry.
I totally plagiarised one of my old PowerPoint slides from a previous talk I did a few month back. So this is going to be dry... very dry.......
WHAT IS AN OPTOMETRIST?
Previously known as ophthalmic opticians, Optometrist are trained professionals who examine eyes, detect eye disease and problems, test sight, give advice on visual problems, and prescribe and dispense spectacles or contact lenses. They also recommend other treatments or visual aids where appropriate. Optometrist is trained to recognise eye diseases and referring such cases as necessary.
Fulfilling the aesthetic needs of clients
From NST Online 2009/10/20,
Written by Dr Ungku Mohd Shahrin
A 19-YEAR-OLD man once came to me asking me to make his skin fairer by three tones. Being an aesthetic surgeon, I told him this was not possible.
He told me his family could afford it when I told him he would have to pay through his nose. He never came back, but it was okay. I also did not prepare the quotation because I called this a case of "unrealistic expectations".
