JOHOR lass Tey Shan Fung smashed her national record in the inaugural Kedah Open weightlifting cham-pionships held from March 25 to March 28 in Jitra, Kedah. She lifted 83kg to break her own national record of 77kg which she recorded last year. She notched up the record in her third attempt following a 75kg lift in the first and 80kg in the second.
Tey, who participated in the women’s above 75kg category, was the only competitor to establish a new record. She had a combined total lift of 188kg to win the gold medal. Tey, 20, from Segamat, Johor, said she took up the sport three years ago. “Breaking my own national record means that I am making progress. But I have to work harder on my clean and jerk aspect to make an impact in the international scene.
“In my first competitive outing in the 2008 Sukma in Terengganu, I was beaten to the third place in the 63kg division. “I hope that I will be able to strike gold in the above 75kg event in this year’s Sukma in Malacca,” she added
